Pancreatic Surgery in Tekirdağ

Pancreatic cancer is an insidious disease that usually causes no symptoms in its early stages. Early diagnosis is therefore the single most critical factor in the possibility of cure and in prolonging survival. Because the disease may already be advanced by the time symptoms appear, people at risk should be assessed without delay when warning signs occur.

Warning Signs

  • Painless jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin, dark urine, pale stools)
  • Abdominal pain radiating to the back, often worse at night
  • Unexplained and rapid weight loss, loss of appetite
  • New-onset diabetes, or existing diabetes that suddenly becomes difficult to control
  • An episode of pancreatitis with no identifiable cause

These findings are not specific to pancreatic cancer and occur in far more common benign conditions; they should nevertheless not be ignored and warrant medical assessment.

Vascular Assessment in the Surgical Decision

The pancreas lies in close proximity to the major vessels supplying the liver and intestines. One of the most decisive factors in the decision to operate is therefore the relationship between the tumour and these vessels. Thin-slice computed tomography before surgery shows which vessels supply the tumour and whether it encases them. On that basis patients are classified as resectable, borderline resectable or locally advanced; borderline patients may become candidates for surgery after chemotherapy.

Surgical Techniques

Whipple Procedure (Pancreaticoduodenectomy)

Performed for tumours of the pancreatic head. The head of the pancreas, the duodenum, the gallbladder and part of the main bile duct are removed, and the digestive tract is then reconstructed. It is among the most extensive operations in general surgery and demands experience.

Distal Pancreatectomy

Performed for tumours of the body and tail of the pancreas; the spleen frequently has to be removed as well. It can be carried out laparoscopically in selected patients.

Total Pancreatectomy

Chosen in multifocal disease involving the whole gland. Lifelong insulin and digestive enzyme support are required afterwards.

After Surgery

Recovery after pancreatic surgery requires closer monitoring than other abdominal operations. Feeding is resumed gradually, and enzyme supplementation and blood glucose monitoring are arranged. Depending on the pathology result, most patients are offered a programme of chemotherapy after surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pankreas kanseri ilk evrelerde genellikle hiçbir belirti vermez.
