Colon Cancer Surgery in Tekirdağ

In colon (large bowel) cancer, surgery is the primary treatment. The need for chemotherapy and radiotherapy before or after the operation is determined through a multidisciplinary approach, according to the location and size of the tumour and the pathology result.

What Is an Oncological Resection?

In colon cancer surgery it is not only the affected bowel segment that is removed, but also the vascular root supplying that segment together with the accompanying lymph node basin, as a single specimen. Oncological adequacy is judged by the number of lymph nodes retrieved and by clear surgical margins. Following this principle allows accurate staging and reduces the risk of recurrence.

Types of Operation

  • Right hemicolectomy: for tumours of the ascending colon and hepatic flexure
  • Left hemicolectomy: for tumours of the descending colon
  • Sigmoidectomy: for tumours of the sigmoid colon
  • Total colectomy: for multifocal tumours or hereditary syndromes
  • Laparoscopic approach: keyhole resection in suitable patients

Does Liver Metastasis End the Chance of Surgery?

No. In colorectal cancer, spread to the liver does not by itself mean that surgery is no longer possible. If the number and distribution of the metastases and the volume of healthy liver that will remain are suitable, the colon tumour and the liver metastases can be removed in the same operation.

Intraoperative ultrasound plays a critical role in these procedures: small lesions not visible on preoperative CT or MRI can be identified during surgery. Diseased tissue is thereby cleared completely while healthy liver tissue is preserved.

The Surgical Pathway

  1. Diagnosis and staging: colonoscopy and biopsy, computed tomography, tumour markers and, where needed, PET-CT
  2. Multidisciplinary board: timing of surgery and the need for chemotherapy
  3. Operation: laparoscopic or open resection, with simultaneous liver surgery where required
  4. Pathology: decision on additional treatment based on margins and lymph node yield
  5. Follow-up: a structured programme of colonoscopy, imaging and tumour markers

Recovery

After laparoscopic surgery, patients generally mobilise earlier, bowel function returns more quickly and the hospital stay is shorter. Feeding is resumed in stages. The oncological follow-up programme is set according to the pathology result and is more frequent in the first years.
